Nanotechnology News – March 2019

Cultocracy note :

Nanotechnology will enable the forthcoming artificial intelligence ‘revolution’ .

Two surveys caught my eye this month , both concern public opinion regarding artificial intelligence (AI) .

Both surveys reveal what AI is currently being used for and what it may be used for in the future .

There are suggestions that an arms race to perfect AI is currently well underway , no surprise there then .

There are also suggestions that AI based technologies will benefit a small section of the general population at the expense of a wider swathe of the population , no surprise there either .

Fears surrounding regulation and the potential bias of AI systems are well founded , as are the fears surrounding AI generated memes designed to lure in the unwitting and sow the seeds of division .

The unfortunate fact regarding AI systems is that they are often programmed to learn by themselves , creating a system so complex that it cannot be deciphered , even by its creators .

So who will ultimately govern AI ?

Probably AI itself .

Artificial Intelligence: American Attitudes and Trends

“Americans consider all of the thirteen AI governance challenges presented in the survey to be important for governments and technology companies to manage carefully. The governance challenges perceived to be the most likely to impact people around the world within the next decade and rated the highest in issue importance were :”

  1. Preventing AI-assisted surveillance from violating privacy and civil liberties
  2. Preventing AI from being used to spread fake and harmful content online
  3. Preventing AI cyber attacks against governments, companies, organizations, and individuals
  4. Protecting data privacy

2019 EDELMAN AI SURVEY

“The survey reveals the many positive benefits but also the potential that AI can be a powerful tool of division. Nearly 70 percent believe AI interjects greater possibilities for digitally enhanced “group think,” lessening creativity and freedom of thought. AI thrives on a lot of centralized information. As autocratic powers are able to access and leverage
that content, they could increasingly control the levers of disinformation thereby further manipulating their populations.”

  1. AI is creating a technology revolution with benefits across all industries.
  2. Tech execs are far more optimistic about AI than is the general population.
  3. Strong majorities believe that AI will benefit the wealthy while nearly half expect the poor will be harmed.
  4. It is widely believed that AI will lead to short-term job losses with potential for societal disruption.
  5. AI can be leveraged as a tool of division by autocrats, sowing disinformation to create digital group think.
  6. AI-enabled “deepfakes” add to the “fake news” narrative and will fundamentally undermine trust in what is real and could lead to war.
  7. Concerning impacts from AI deployment include more social isolation and less human intellectual capability.
  8. Half of both groups believe the pace of technology is advancing too quickly.
  9. Tech companies must demonstrate AI transparency and social benefits.
  10. There is a clear need to do more to regulate AI development and deployment.

Nanotechnology News – March 2019

Genetics

Cultocracy note :

More Frankenstein experiments from the Mengele Minds .

If you think that enhanced intelligence is simply a byproduct of genetic experimentation then think again .

Nonconsensual testing is widespread , the human guinea pigs involved are often termed ‘test tubes’ .

CRISPR twins found to have enhanced intelligence

“The brains of two genetically edited girls born in China last year may have been changed in ways that enhance cognition and memory, scientists say.”

“Now, new research shows that the same alteration introduced into the girls’ DNA, deletion of a gene called CCR5, not only makes mice smarter but also improves human brain recovery after stroke, and could be linked to greater success in school.”

Transgenic monkeys develop brains similar to humans

“Brain size and cognitive skills are the most dramatically changed traits in humans during evolution, and yet the genetic mechanisms underlying these human-specific changes remain elusive. Here, we successfully generated 11 transgenic rhesus monkeys (8 first-generation and 3 second-generation) carrying human copies of MCPH1, an important gene for brain development and brain evolution. Brain image and tissue section analyses indicated an altered pattern of neural cell differentiation, resulting in a delayed neuronal maturation and neural fiber myelination of the transgenic monkeys, similar to the known evolutionary change of developmental delay (neoteny) in humans. “

Study pinpoints genes that control regeneration

“Researchers are shedding new light on how animals perform whole-body regeneration, and uncovered a number of DNA switches that appear to control genes used in the process.”

“What we found is that this one master gene comes on…and that’s activating genes that are turning on during regeneration,”

Cellular memory may be useful for regenerative medicine

“In research that casts cells as curators of their own history, scientists have discovered that adult tissues retain a memory, inscribed on their DNA, of the embryonic cells from which they arose.”

“The findings may open a new chapter in regenerative medicine, as scientists explore whether cell memory can be harnessed to generate replacement tissue for organs that are damaged or diseased, the study authors say.”

Epigenetic inheritance via sperm

“Epigenetic changes do not alter the DNA sequences of genes, but instead involve chemical modifications to either the DNA itself or to the histone proteins with which DNA is packaged in the chromosomes. These modifications or “marks” change gene expression, turning genes on or off.”

Researchers identify the beneficial role of sleep

“DNA damage can be caused by many processes including radiation, oxidative stress, and even neuronal activity. DNA repair systems within each cell correct this damage. The current work shows that during wakefulness, when chromosome dynamics are low, DNA damage consistently accumulates and can reach unsafe levels.”

Cultocracy note :

Oh dear , have they not learnt a thing .

Keep a lookout for misleading ‘scientific’ propaganda articles using toxic terms such as ‘sustainable development’ , ‘environmentally friendly’ and ‘responsible use’ .

Strange thing , the articles never mention ‘greed’ , ‘poison’ or ‘profit’ .

Only a matter of time before we see a Triffid driving a car , maybe in China .

Makes you wonder what else they are conjuring up in their little shops of horror .

CRISPR modified food

“Scientists argue that new plant breeding technologies can contribute significantly to food security and sustainable development. Genome editing techniques in particular, such as CRISPR/Cas, could help to make agriculture more productive and environmentally friendly. The researchers advocate the responsible use and support of these new technologies.”

Cultocracy note :

Obviously AI generated fake news , just spotted a glaring error .

Scientists never argue .

Especially when there is cash on the table .

Scientists construct artificial photosynthetic cells

“Tokyo Institute of Technology has constructed simple artificial cells that can produce chemical energy that helps synthesize parts of the cells themselves. This work marks an important milestone in constructing fully photosynthetic artificial cells……..”

Seeds inherit memories from their mother

“Seeds remain in a dormant state as long as environmental conditions are not ideal for germination. The depth of this sleep is inherited from their mother.”

Implants Neuroprosthetics

Lipid vesicles transmit luminous or electrical signals

“Liposomes are small spherical vesicles with walls comprising two layers of lipids and containing an aqueous core. These artificial structures have been developed for drug delivery or as carriers of active substances in cosmetic products. Another possible application involves the encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles in liposomes to use them to transmit signals.”

“Instead of delivering drugs, however, the nanometric liposomes transported magnetite nanoparticles with fluorophores (fluorescent molecules) or electrically charged lipids. The fluorophores and charged lipids were used to transmit signals, while the magnetic particles were used to control transmission by means of magnets.”

“According to the researchers, these devices can be used to perform Boolean logic operations in which the variables and functions have values only of 0 and 1.”

Cyborgs made from melanin

“The dark brown melanin pigment, eumelanin, colors hair and eyes, and protects our skin from sun damage. It has also long been known to conduct electricity, but too little for any useful application – until now. ”

“Italian researchers subtly modified the structure of eumelanin by heating it in a vacuum. “

“Our process produced a billion-fold increase in the electrical conductivity of eumelanin,”

“This makes possible the long-anticipated design of melanin-based electronics, which can be used for implanted devices due to the pigment’s biocompatibility.”

Told ya we’d soon see a Triffid driving a car .

Materials

Silicon nanoparticles could extend the life of lithium-ion batteries by 10 times

“……….a silicon-based lithium-ion battery that could store and release 10 times as much electric charge as a conventional cell.”

Cultocracy note :

New batteries + 5G = Smartphones are now officially the opium of the people .

AI designed materials

“Give an intelligent computer system any design, and it can predict the properties,”

“This trend is emerging in the material science field. It’s a great example of applying artificial intelligence to change the standard process of material design in this field.”

Graphene

Graphene ultrasensitive biosensors

Graphene device can boil water & harvest solar energy

“Graphene has unique properties,”

“It can absorb any wavelength of light from UV to microwaves.”

“In addition, the ultrathin design reduces the amount of material used, which enables it to heat up rapidly. This is why the device can heat from 300C to 1500C in 30 seconds…”

Cultocracy note :

Shock breaking news……A hyped up graphene product that has actually made it to market .

Well not quite……..

If there are any investors out there I have blueprints for several revolutionary graphene products ; graphene underpants , graphene fish & chips , graphene toothpaste and graphene beer .

Yours for fifty quid .

In fact you can buy my revolutionary graphene company ‘Grollox’ for a hundred quid .

Graphene Technology Firm Set to Revolutionize Water Filtration Market

“A COMPANY using the transformational material, graphene, to revolutionize the water filtration industry has moved into new lab and office space to support plans to take its innovative product to market.”

“The firm has recently secured a further £1m equity investment in a second funding round, including £200,000 from the Finance Durham Fund….”

Quantum Computing , Communications & AI

Cultocracy note :

New research this month tells us that the AI revolution may be like the graphene revolution , doubts are creeping in , looks like the bigger players are having trouble applying their intelligence .

Is the end goal a machine that thinks like man , or a man that thinks like a machine ?

Or a fusion of the two ?

Game theory can improve human robot interaction

“The research team used adaptive control and Nash equilibrium game theory to programme a robot that can understand its human user’s behaviour in order to better anticipate their movements and respond to them.”

“The reactive robotic programming system enables a robot to continuously learn the human user’s control and adapt its own control correspondingly.”

Cutocracy note :

I beg to differ :

Fruit fly thinks like a supercomputer algorithm

“Fruit flies and computers apparently follow the same thinking process when it comes to analyzing unknown information. A new study indicated that computer algorithms could take some hints from the way flies identify new smells.”

“Saket Navlakha figured out the means by which the brain of a fruit fly recognized similar odors. They noted the similarity between this and the Bloom filter tool used by computers for novelty detection purposes.”

Cultocracy note :

Does this mean that the fly is super intelligent or the AI has a gnat brain ?

Bloom filters and cuckoo filters are used extensively in swarm-intelligence algorithms which are in turn used within a wide range of AI based systems . In reality a fusion of many different algorithms power AI applications that are used extensively by the surveillance state and the worlds of high finance and economics , the fields often overlap .

Swarm intelligence algorithms are integral to predictive AI algorithms , individual human behavior can be classed and then grouped , useful for statistical analysis and probability based analysis .

Results can then be extrapolated to model individual behavior or group behavior .

Human inspired AI inspires humans

“Can artificial intelligence (AI) help us understand how the brain understands language? Can neuroscience help us understand why AI and neural networks are effective at predicting human perception?”

“With such a system in place, Huth believes it is only a matter of time until a mind-reading system that can translate brain activity into language is feasible. In the meantime, they are gaining insights into both neuroscience and artificial intelligence from their experiments.”

Researchers get humans to think like computers

“The findings suggest modern computers may not be as different from humans as we think, and demonstrate how advances in artificial intelligence continue to narrow the gap between the visual abilities of people and machines.”

Cultocracy note :

One caveat regarding AI , how can you prove that an AI system has actually learned anything at all ?

Measuring AI’s ability to learn is difficult

“Organizations looking to benefit from the artificial intelligence (AI) revolution should be cautious about putting all their eggs in one basket, a study from the University of Waterloo has found.”

“We have to proceed with caution,” said Shai Ben-David, lead author of the study and a professor in Waterloo’s School of Computer Science. “There is a big trend of tools that are very successful, but nobody understands why they are successful, and nobody can provide guarantees that they will continue to be successful.”

Listening to quantum radio

“Researchers at Delft University of Technology have created a quantum circuit that enables them to listen to the weakest radio signal allowed by quantum mechanics”

“This new quantum circuit opens the door to possible future applications in areas such as radio astronomy and medicine (MRI).”

Quantum rainbow for communications

“Some of the most advanced communication systems now under development rely on the properties of quantum science to store and transport information.”

“One of the more counterintuitive properties of quantum mechanics, quantum entanglement occurs when two or more photons or other particles are prepared in a way that makes them so intrinsically connected that they behave as one unit. A measurement that determines the quantum state of one of the entangled particles automatically determines the state of the other, even if the two particles lie on opposite sides of the universe. Entanglement lies at the heart of many quantum information schemes, including quantum computing and encryption.”

5G

Cultocracy note :

Interesting news on the 5G battlefront suggests that the tech might not live up to the hype , perhaps the ‘G’ in ‘5G’  stands for graphene .

No wonder China is leading the race , a sign of the times .

Other news suggests that the Five Eyes syndicate is split down the middle on 5G tech manufactured in China .

Or is it the age old dialectic in full effect , pincer movement style .

As for the lampposts , I am sure they could be put to a more productive use .

Verizon 5G Flops in US test

“Verizon claims incredible 5G speeds on its brand-new network. That’s not what happened for me.”

BT Wants Open Access to Lampposts for 5G

“BT is urging the industry to do away with exclusive access agreements to local council-owned street furniture, such as lampposts and CCTV poles, to encourage faster and less costly deployments of 4G and 5G small cells in city centres across the UK.”

Cutocracy note :

5G media coverage now reads like a cheap soap opera thanks to the desperadoes in the Western deep state .

“Six retired U.S. defense officials issued a statement on Wednesday warning that European and Asian partners could put American military operations at risk if they use Chinese technology in their 5G networks.”

“As Pentagon leaders warn about Huawei’s 5G networking products, its UK counterparts say they don’t plan a blanket ban on Chinese components as they move to the next-gen standard.”

“U.S. says Chinese technology opens backdoor to spies”
“If the Americans have evidence, please put it out’: Vodafone”

“Germany has refused to ban any company, despite pressure from the U.S. Instead, Chancellor Angela Merkel reiterated that her country would instead tighten security rules.”

“But policymakers and analysts in Germany acknowledge that this debate isn’t just about network security. It’s a geopolitical confrontation between two superpowers with strong ties to the European Union.”

“Chinese tech giant, Huawei, has been at the forefront of 5G…..”

“A notable exception is the U.S., which considers the company to be a national security threat. “

“5G is not an atomic bomb” Ren Zhengfei told CBS

“U.S. national security officials are planning for a future in which the Chinese firm Huawei will have a major share of the advanced global telecommunications market, and have begun to think about how to thwart potential espionage and disruptive cyberattacks enabled by interconnected networks.”

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram are ‘garbage’

“Tech pioneer Linus Torvalds says the way social media works today encourages bad behavior. It’s a disease.”

“The whole ‘liking’ and ‘sharing’ model is just garbage. There is no effort and no quality control. In fact, it’s all geared to the reverse of quality control, with lowest common denominator targets, and click-bait and things designed to generate an emotional response, often one of moral outrage.”

Amazon , Google , AI and the Deep State

“Beyond facial recognition, we’re giving smart devices and platforms our intimate biometric details.”

“They know your voice….and follow your footsteps”

Cultocracy note :

That was always part of the plan .

Environment

Wood-based technology creates electricity from body heat

“the team transformed a piece of wood into a flexible membrane that generates energy from the same type of electric current (ions) that the human body runs on.”

 Nanofibre filters pollutants and viruses

“The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) has recently developed an electrostatically charged nanofiber filter with multiple separator layers, which can capture pollutant particles that are below 100 nm in diameter (covering the most common airborne nano-particles and viruses).”

Billions of nanoplastics accumulate in marine organisms

“The next time your dinner plate contains any kind of clam harvested from the sea, you may want to order a plant-based salad instead. A recent British study has shown that scallops and other similar marine bivalve mollusks can get completely contaminated by nano-sized bits of plastics after just a few hours of exposure.”

Solar powered clean water

“The new material is designed to both harvest moisture from the air and produce clean water under sunlight, avoiding intensive energy consumption,”

Nanomaterials and pollinating insects

“Currently there is no data on the realistic concentrations of nanomaterials in pollen available. Hence, it is impossible to estimate the amount of nanomaterials that pollinating insects are exposed to. One reason for the lack of such data are analytical constrains in the detection of nanomaterials in the environment.”
